Dr Vishal Kumar PhD

Lecturer - Building and Facilities Management

Doctoral Co-Supervisor
School of Built Environment

Dr Vishal Kumar is a lecturer in the School of Built Environment at 羞羞视频. His research interests are Integrated Digital Delivery using BIM, Digital Twin in construction and Smart Facilities Management. His research focuses on how a more efficient information transfer system for BIM-FM can be developed, addressing the current challenges of the fragmented information-capturing process during the design and construction stages.

Furthermore, his research looks into better information management of buildings throughout the entire lifecycle using standardized information exchange documents such as product data templates to revolutionize BIM-based automated data capturing to fasten the BIM modelling process. His doctoral thesis focused on identifying and understanding the issues associated with a widely used BIM-FM data handover format (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange or COBie) and proposing mitigation strategies.

Dr. Vishal has a PhD and Masters (Project Management) from the National University of Singapore and a Bachelor of Architecture from Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi (India). He has worked as a Research Fellow in the Centre for 5G Digital Building Technology, where he researched 5G network applications that enhance Smart Facilities Management. He was also involved in setting up the new Robotics lab for the Centre.

Before starting the academic journey, he worked for eight years in multiple companies in different senior positions. He worked on various large-scale design projects such as hotels, educational institutions, and hospitals using Building Information Modelling (BIM). His role involved overlooking BIM modelling, development of BIM execution plan, asset data management, BIM workflow management, training and development, and BIM-based coordination among stakeholders.

Project Title: Adapting Aging Communities: Feasibility of Retrofitting Residential Environments for Elderly-Friendly Living in New Zealand

This study systematically reviews international best practices from countries like the USA., China, and Singapore and assesses their feasibility in the New Zealand context. Using a mixed-methods approach, including digital simulations and 3D modelling, the research aims to provide practical strategies for integrating long-term care services and improving housing conditions for the elderly. The findings will support future retrofitting initiatives, ensuring safer, more comfortable, and sustainable living spaces for New Zealand鈥檚 aging population.
